Will the world be the same without cash?

What will happen if digital currency usurpes cash. If we have no bank account then you can’t pay for anything which is the most devastating potential problem if we go cashless. This is the biggest threat because if you have a conflict with the bank, they can literally pull the plug on you. If we continue down the totalitarian government road in what we saw with Freeland freezing bank accounts during the Trucker Convoy digital can become a tool of social control. This is why we ought to use cash and encourage others to use cash. As well speak up to your bank and government if you want cash to stay as legal tender.

Here is a list of the digital currency world:

  • Credit and debit cards

  • Electronic payment apps like PayPal and Venmo

  • Mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay

  • Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin

  • Quick Response (QR) codes

  • Electronic gift cards

  • ACH bank transfers

All these digital systems create data which can be easily tracked and monitored by businesses and the government. And they can be and are susceptible to hacking and fraud.

And there are many things you will not be able to do without cash for example:

Even the world’s most cashless societies, including Sweden and the Netherlands, have recommended people keep paper money in case of emergencies, weather-related disasters, like hurricanes, have caused power outages that prevent people from using ATMs or making electronic transactions.

Paper money also isn’t subject to cybersecurity risks or potential privacy violations.

When I hand you a $20 bill, there is no data captured by anybody from that transaction…it’s a relatively anonymous private thing, whereas all digital forms of payment generate data trails..

What are the cashless plans out there?

Some forms of digital currencies have started to gain traction, including the possibility of a central bank digital currency from the Federal Reserve (which is currently being debated), and privately issued stablecoins, which are digital currencies or cryptocurrencies that are tied to a stable asset, like the US dollar.

A retail CBDC is essentially a digital version of physical cash. Like cash, CBDCs are issued by central banks, and their value is tied to a national currency. One Canadian CBDC would equal one Canadian dollar, and it could be used for in-person and online purchases, as well as payments between businesses.

The move toward digital(CBDCs) would shift the monetary power from the private sector, or banks, to the government.

Much of the money we use today is already electronic, through demand deposits, while a big reason people don’t use banks is because they don’t trust them. If you’re already skeptical of the financial system and potentially the government, a CBDC is not going to be popular.

The U.S. dollar is the reserve currency of the world because people trust the U.S. for many reasons, which aren’t tied to any of the dollar’s technological capabilities. US has a stable currency, a robust rule of law, US respects property rights, and enforces contracts, with an independent judiciary. These features so important to the world are at risk of being circumvented in an entirely digital system

Central banks are intent on bringing in the stablecoin and we are not far off from people using stablecoins in everyday transactions, even though some have raised the possibility that the stablecoin could one day replace the U.S. dollar.

Do we need paper money to keep the economy running well?

There isn’t necessarily an economic reason that dictates a need to keep paper money. It’s more that it’s what people want.

And as long as we want paper money, we will always have it.

Cash has been kept in circulation because so many people still use it despite the move toward cashless payments.

A study by Payments Canada found:

Key study findings:

  • 31 per cent of Canadians use cash for day-to-day purchases.

  • 49 per cent believe Canadian stores will be completely cashless in the next 10 years.

  • 52 per cent feel concerned about the prospect of cashless stores.

  • 26 per cent of Canadians feel the need to wash their hands after handling cash.

  • Canadians are divided on embracing digital currency; 36 per cent find a digital dollar appealing, while 30 per cent do not.

  • Key motivators to use cash include speed (38 per cent); widely accepted (38 per cent); ability to use own funds rather than borrow (25 per cent).

  • 15 per cent of Canadians use cash to make ‘under the table’ payments.

  • One in 10 Canadians feel more ‘spend guilt’ using cash.

“Of the 87 per cent of Canadians that still use cash, nearly one in three (31 per cent) use cash for day-to-day purchases, such as making a small purchase, paying expenses, or paying a friend or family member. Nearly one in four (37 per cent) are using cash not only to make day-to-day payments but also hold on to it for emergencies. Older Canadians (55 years or older) are significantly more likely than other age groups to be using cash in this multi-purpose way. A further 32 per cent of Canadians report mainly holding on to cash in case of emergencies but have stopped using it for day-to-day payments.” LINK TO STUDY

We are recommending to increase the use of cash and spread the word about the risk of privacy breaches and social control if our society becomes cashless.

How To Keep Our Cash Alive?

  1. Always try to keep Cash on you and use it everywhere you can.Stop using self-checkout - ask to be served by a store clerk and be prepared to leave if they refuse.

  2. If a business will not accept Cash - politely explain why you are using Cash, give them a $20Bill handout. If they still refused to accept your payment - let your feet do the talking.

  3. Wear a message (t-shirt, cap?) with UseCash to spread the word OR make your own stickers, buttons OR see our Merch Section for ideas.

  4. Print off our newslette and $20 dollar bill and share with family and friends-use as handouts everywhere.  Or contact us for a supply of these items.

  5. Tell family and friends about the risks of going cashless - ensure they understand why it's SO important to use Cash.

  6. When you tell 2 friends and they will tell 2 friends soon all will know the risks - follow up to see if they are using Cash to keep the chain going.

  7. Do you know of any businesses that refuse to accept Cash? Let them know they will be added to our list.
